the-roots-hot-97-summer-jam-2014-leadYesterday night Hot 97 had the Met Life stadium packed and full of surprises as they held their annual Summer Jam concert, this years performers included Nicki Minaj, Nas, Sevyn Steeter, 50 Cent, Wiz Khalifa, Trey Songz and more. This was my first time at Summer Jam and I enjoyed my experience besides all the ratchet-ness from the attends I had a great time. Some of my favorite performances came from Trey Songz there were not a lot of R&B acts on this years Summer Jam compared to past shows, but Trey held it down on the main stage for R&B that night.

Even thought I’m not a big 50 cent fan, he had hits back in the day, but since then I don’t really see him as a rapper anymore. I see 50 more as a businessman. I must admit though 50 had the crowd hype and even more excited when he reunited with G Unit, at one point you did start to see the crowd get a little bored when 50 started performing songs nobody really knew.

Meek Mill brought Philly to NYC as he was brought on as a special guest along with French Montana during Nas set. Wiz Khalfia had the crowd on their feet as well, especially when he performed his new single “We Dem Boyz” and brought Snoop Dogg on stage to perform Wild and Free.

The moment I have been waiting for was to finally see Nicki Minaj and YMCMB hit the stage. Now for a while I have not been on the Nicki Minaj train since the release of her sophomore album, but now that she’s kind of going back to her old formula, but with a much better approach I’m slowly becoming team Nicki Minaj again. I’ve never seen Nicki perform live besides on television I loved her set. Nicki had the crowd shocked when she got on the mic and said

“There is one nigga in Young Money Im not fu*king with right now, That Nigga Drake, Im not fu*king with him right now.

When Nicki said that the whole stadium was just gasping for air, turns out the whole thing was a joke as Drake came out and they both laughed and showed love as Nicki straddled Drake who performed his hits Worst Behavior, All Me and Believe Me with Lil Wayne.

R&B Supergroup TGT Perform At 5 Towers Outdoor Concert ArenaTyrese, Tank and Ginuwine have been wowing audiences individually the world over for almost 2 decades. However last Thursday they came together as a unit to put on a fantastic and blazing concert in London’s prestigious Eventim Apollo in support of their Grammy-nominated album – Three Kings’. The guys did not miss a beat and certainly didn’t miss any notes as all three of them simply SANG their faces off.

The show was 2 hours of non-stop hits both old and new with a major focus on the gems from their debut offering as a group with the only misstep being that the boys opted not to include fan-favourite ‘Hurry’ in the setlist. Can’t you just imagine how epic the harmonies would’ve sounded in a live setting with that song?

The R&B veterans also made sure to pay homage to their esteemed careers as solo entities which have placed them on such a high pedestal in R&B’s playground. Tank took the audience to church with stirring renditions of ‘Maybe I Deserve’ and Please Don’t Go’. Meanwhile Ginuwine undoubtedly upped the ante and vibe with highly energised and passionate showings of ‘So Anxious’, ‘In Those Jeans’ and the bonafide classic ‘Pony’. Last but not least Mr Fast and Furious Tyrese came out with soulful and vocally appeasing presentations of ‘How You Gonna Act Like That’, ‘Stay’ and ‘Sweet Lady’.

The ultimate highlight was arguably the supergroup’s tribute to 90s R&B where they effortlessly belted out timeless hits from the likes of Jodeci, Guy and Mary J. Blige consequently earning a thunderous applause from their dedicated audience.

The entire ‘Three Kings’ album cycle and era should serve as a template for many R&B singers who perhaps don’t get as a much as love and appreciation as they should to come together and revitalise their brands while reaching a new and younger audience.

After all there is strength in numbers.

Tyrese, Tank & Ginuwine – Excellent Job Fellas – We await your return to UK Shores!
