It’s been 20 years since Janet Jackson released her album “Janet” which sold 7 million copies and spawned six Billboard singles.  Now that the anniversary of that album is about to approach Ms. Jackson is ready to please her fans again and return back on the scene with brand new material.

“I can’t believe it is already 20 years!” “I always write my music based on what is going on in my life at the time. I wanted to allow people in… I want my fans to really know me. The janet. album was sexual and I was beginning to really discover that side of me.”

Janet’s last album was released back in 2008 and since then a lot of people thought Janet was done with music but the singer confirmed herself that she is working on new material. Don’t expect the album to be released anytime soon Janet said that she has no plans on rushing the album. “I am working on a new project now. We are creating the concept and initial thoughts on the music,”  “I am excited about the direction we are taking. I don’t want to rush it… I don’t want to put a time constraint on the creative process.” ( Via Billboard)

If John Singleton, F. Gary Gray, and Spike Lee were looking for music scoring or soundtrack to their epic films, evolutionist soul man Brian Owens would make the definitive WINNING ballot.  His album Moods and Messages is an old-fangled game changer that will open the many doors of opportunity for this artist of calibre.

Owens crafts pure soul- a dynamic deficient in today’s R&B to a genre congested with emotionless appeal incapable of capturing an ambiance of sorts; void of impact, significance, and substance.  The band funk sound of “Soul Anthem (Bring It Back)” demonstrates this artist power move, providing the mood of thrill and overall message of resurrection and new beginnings.  “Keep Movin’ On” validates Owen’s of having a fierce and assorted vocal range that is compared to the greats Marvin Gaye, Maxwell, Raphael Saadiq, and Sam Cooke.  This uptempo creates uplifting spirits presenting positive messages of conquest and appreciation to a battered woman and a depressed and injured soldier.

Owens sings about salvaging self before self-destructing on the soulful “I Just Want To Feel Alright.”  Gospel/R&B flavored songs like “Open,” “Troubled Man,” and “The Answer” are life testimonials of a decompose economy and what today’s society considers the norm- severed relationships lacking love, communication, and depreciation of the concept of marriage in supplanting misogynistic crux.

While all songs are attention grabbers, it is Mr. Owen’s ballads that are alluring as a subtle invitation to a woman’s heart impregnating her with his musical rhythm and lyrical poesy.  The guitar strokes of “Beautiful Love” compliment the crooning of this prolific singer, which captivates the spirit of Al Green’s discography in pace and tone.  “Till The Morning Breaks” make couples produce offspring to a bottle of Remy Martin and an outside backyard Jacuzzi on a scorching summer night.  “Oh I” is the archetypal song that should have made the scoring and soundtrack to the 2012 version of Sparkle.  It’s capable of reaching deeply down into a woman’s tear that continuously drips from her eyes, to find beauty and purity of her cry over a foolish and nonexistent love.

Moods and Messages defines Brian Owens as the author of authentic black love and African American pride.  It is a soulful concierto that carnivals an antique 1950s and 1960s Motown sound antithetical of a callous catalogue and diametric of a crowd catcall.  What lacked in R&B is finally made up.
