For the past few years I’ve had a love/hate relationship with R&B music. On one hand while I love songs describing the feeling one gets while being in a loving relationship, I found myself hating the new genre of R&B that was being released. Although there were a few artists that continued to display the type of R&B that I loved, I was just getting tired of the artists that were trying to be rappers or that made everything in R&B overly sexual.

Then Justin Timberlake decided to make a comeback.

I’m not going to sit up here and pretend like I was always the biggest Justin Timberlake fan because I wasn’t (despite having a few of his hit singles on my iPod). But I did know that I could rely on him to continue establishing his own sound without trying to mimic what is popular on urban radio.

The 20/20 Experience is Timberlake’s 3rd album, the 1st in seven years. He once again links up with Timbaland, the man that helped him create the magic on his first two albums, hoping to create some of that magic on this album.

Cara’s Thoughts

  • I could play “Spaceship Coupe” all day long. And I think I’ve repeated it about 5 times within the past hour already. From Timberlake’s pitch, to the slow melody everything is pure perfection.
  • I love “Pusher Love Girl” as much as I did when I heard it the first time on the Grammy’s. But I’m sure it’ll sound even better live, with a live band.
  • He could’ve did without that “Let The Groove In” track. It just messes up the entire flow of the album and sounds like the odd man out like it didn’t belong. Definitely skip worthy.
  • While I will always miss the magic that Timbaland created with the “Legion of Doom”, Timberlake continues to bring out the greatness out of Timbo. This is the type of music I can get behind..not that poppy techno stuff he’s been releasing for the past few years. Now that mess he can keep.
  • Despite the lone appearance from Jay-Z, it was a welcome relief that Timberlake didn’t cloud his album with a bunch of guest appearances from the “hottest rappers” out right now. Finally an album that decides to shine on its own without the help from Drake, Rick Ross, and Lil Wayne. I can barely contain my excitement! (I mean let’s be honest..We have our fair share of Ross, Drake, & Weezy features)

What most impresses me about this album is the fact that while it sounds very much like the Justin Timberlake that we’ve heard on the 1st two albums he still incorporates something new into his sound. Unlike other albums that I’ve heard from other R&B artists, not once did I feel like I’ve heard this type of music from Timberlake before. With The 20/20 Experience, Justin Timberlake accomplishes what many are unable to do: maintaining his fundamental sound but still managing to keep it fresh with new traits and features. He’s evolving without selling out in order to sell records. What a breath of fresh air.
